Together, the cam position sensor and crank position sensor detect crank shaft rotation during one engine-combustion cycle.

The reason I ask is I finally took my car to a shop to fix an idle issue that only happens when the car is driven for 1/2 hour or so, and he told me today that it may be the opti or the cam sensor and as far as I know it does not have one. Just wanted some info from the experts.

In my experience, a lot of the japanese automakers refer to a "cam sensor" when we would likely call the part a "distributor."
I learned this when I got a "Cam Position Sensor" code on my Altima. What did I do to fix it- replaced the distributor.
I think they get the whole "CPS" name due to the fact that it uses an optical encoder.

The 94 doesn't have a cam sensor, unless that's what he is calling the opti-spark. The 96 OBDII cars have a crank position sensor.

The optispark contains a cam position sensor.
The mechanic saying it could be the opti _or_ the cam position sensor makes me question his knowledge of the car.
