Default Clutch Slipping

have a 96 LT4 with 72000 miles on it. On the way to work this morning I noticed the clutch slipping while climbing a moderate incline (highway bridge). So of course I said "AAHH, S&%T).

Did some driving tests to see if I could replicate the slippage and I only notice it in 5 or 6th gear between 1500 and 2200 RPM. Clutch seems to catch up with the engine at that point. I know these tests were obviously not scientific and I was using my eye to tachometer to get the numbers.

My question is, is this the flywheel that is worn out, or could it be other areas and if so what should be my next steps in determining what I should do next.

I priced a fly wheel on Autozone for 250.00 dollars, but I was wondering what other parts I would need to consider. The motor is stock and I do not plan any upgrades in the near future. I have access to a lift and mechanics that will help me. (Military auto hobby shop).

Thanks in advance for your advice and expertise

Geoff

Flywheel is probably OK unless it has been abused. I would get a good quality clutch pack and throw out bearing and open it up. Check your rear main seal and clutch slave while you have it apart.

My clutch went out at about 29k. I bought the car with 24k and needless to say I was a bit "annoyed". I wondered if the original 24k's were a 1/4 mile at a time. Turned out the bolt that held the clutch fork on was backing out and caused the clutch to wear out.

My brother fixed it. His cost $750. Parts at dealer cost and employee discount labor. GM service manual calls for replacing the dual mass flywheel since it cannot be machined. Dealer cost on a dual mass is about $900. My brother did a little sanding on the rough spots and it works fine, however a little noisier than new. I don't know what Autozone was quoting you, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the spec replacement for the ZF6. I have put about 25k on it since the fix and it's running very strong. BTW the symptoms were the same, slipping 4th 5th and catching up, but it got progressively worse rather quickly.

After I posted this question, I did a little more reseach and noticed the price is pretty low...

What is a clutch pack? First I have heard of it?

If I remember correctly, the clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing are an assembly with the ZF6. Perhaps this is what is meant by a clutch pack.?
