I started replacing all of my u-joints due noise and vibration. The half shaft joints were totally shot. Had new spicers pressed in by a local driveline shop. The owner suggested doing the drive shaft as well.
I pulled the drive shaft out...yes you can remove it without taking out the c-beam on an 87. I brought said shaft to the shop and the owner reports my slip yoke is worn. He states it looks like the bushing or bearing from the tailhousing of the trans is worn. He states I need to get a new driveshaft or at the very least a new slip yoke.
Does anyone know of a source? Dealer says it is no longer stocked. I have not seen them available from the usual aftermarket suppliers either.
How hard is to replace the bushing at the end of the transmission?
The car is an 87 with an automatic trans 700r4
TIA
Craig

Reason: forgot to give info on the trans
Fleet Pride has the yokes; $55 part # 864 2-3-4911X
They should have a shop near you. That bushing is easy to remove & replace, if you have the right tool. Atec makes a nice tool for doing it; your local toolman (or scorp508's dad) should be able to get you one. Runs about $85 but if you're lucky, AutoZone might have one to rent.
The real problem is finding that bushing. GM no longer has it listed in their parts inventory, but you may be able to use a TH350 rear bushing, or possibly a 700R4 bushing (and seal, too).
Thanks for the info and the quick reply. I will check with fleet pride and see I can get one. I will have to check out that special tool...I enjoy buying new tools.

Without the # 864, the "2-3-4911X" is a Spicer part number. The '87 takes a 27 spline slip yoke for either a 700R4 or the 4+3 trans.

If it is an automatic, the bushing and seal should be no problem. The TH350, 700R4, and even the 4+3, all take a National seal part number 9613S. The bushing and seal kit for the TH350 and 700R4, is National part number 5200. My GM parts book shows the 4+3 bushing available only with the rear housing. My National book is FUBAR on the subject of manual transmissions. It is unclear as to whether the Kit 5200 fits the 4+3, or not. It does fit some manuals in some 80's Corvettes, with 27 output spline. I don't know if your's is a manual or not, but if it is, and if I were a betting man, I'd say it is worth checking out.

Finding the seal and bushing for the automatic won't be any trouble compared to what I went through to look up parts you don't want or need. The automatic was easy. The 4+3...
