hey all i have a 1988 35th, and the speakers are shot in it. it has the Bose sound system. i have a new CD player on order for it. i just need some help with the speakers. what fits in the corvette, i know the Bose has 4in. can i go bigger since i am changing the header unit?
I have 2 Sony 12 inch woofers in a box in the back with I believe they are 4X9s in the wheel wells. I will double check and 4 inch alphines in the doors. I tried 6 1/2 but they had fitment issues. Plus a bigger amp. Really booms with the base
I put 6.5" components in the doors with the tweeters and crossovers under the dash and 6 x 9's in the rear hatch area. I went to a sound booth in "BEST BUY" (save the hate, not a regular shopper) and listened to Rockford Fosgate, Alpine, Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood and found that JBL sounded better than all of them.
did you guys have to do major rewiring when you put your new speakers in? everyone i talked to at the stores says i need to rewire the whole thing becuse of the Bose. they offered to do it for a mere $230 extra , thats when i decided to do it myself.
Check out the Audio/Electronics section of the forum, under General Corvette discussions. There's LOTS of information there. In fact, our member Bogus setup a sticky at the very top of that forum that deals entirely with the subject of C4 audio, including the Bose system.

There are those that recommend running all new wires for the speakers. I used the existing NON POWER wiring in the doors, (4 inch round infinities) and (6 x 9 infinities) in the back. There's a small amount of modification to the rears but if you have a dremel.......no problem.
Back ones are 6X9s as well. Don't know why I thought 4X9. Redo your wiring and remove ALL bose. Thats my opinion though. I havent missed anything about Bose.

I was prepared to do that if the sound quality of my Sony head unit was affected but after almost 2 years it's still clear and loud. Roof off and 70mph the music can be heard quite well.....
In the 90, 6X9s in the rocker panels and rears, 8" kicker in the compartment behind the driver.
In the 89, 6-1/2 MAs in the doors and 6X9s in the rear.

6x9s in back, 4" in doors, and 4x6" in dash if you cut the center of the dash plates out like the non-Bose cars.
Anything larger than that will require some creativity.
Also I think you can just run the speakers off the pre-amp wiring if you don't want to bother with new wire.
Personally, I did 6x9s in back, 6.5" mid components in doors, tweeters in dash, and a 10" sub in the storage compartment. Good setup, but next time I'd use better quality speakers.

Just curious about what brand you went with on the mid/doors/tweeter setup?
thanks.

So, JBL speakers it was!
I have JBL's in my 1990 coupe plus a Clarion head unit. It sounds great and the head unit can be modified so that the display color matches the other gauges.

One 10 inch woofer? Did 2 12 sony explodes. I wish I coulda fit 2 15" subs back there. Not sure about tweeters. Small speakers in the dash? Barely heard the word. Just know people use them for sound.

I was going to install four 20" subs back there, but I thought it'd be better to have storage space. It's completely hidden with the door shut.
The rest of the speakers are crappy infinity reference.
I had a Pioneer CD stereo installed with an Alpine Amp. 6x9" rear and 6x5" in the doors. I kept the original wires. I had mine installed at Good Guys. It cost about $1000.00 with labor. I spent a couple of months looking around for the best deal. The prices vary. Wait for a big sale.
WoW!
Somebody likes amps....
How did the stock alternator handle powering all those amps at night-lights on + the AC on at idle?
Talk about sucking out some juice!
