So I was pulling up to my friends house yesterday and all of the sudden I hear this wretched screech... Basically every time I push the clutch pedal in it makes this nasty noise, the car can still move but it shudders pretty bad before moving, I dont know much about clutches so if anybody could give their opinion on what might be wrong I would much appreciate it.
Sounds like a failed throw out bearing. Whatever it is, I wouldn't drive it except to get it on a lift so the bell housing can be removed for a look at the clutch.
Just had my clutch replaced........$300.00 The only reason it was that low was that the entire transmission, exhaust system and anti roll cage was already out to get the 4+3 rebuilt. A clutch job alone will run close to 6 bills.
It isn't, really, until you find that the pressure plate has a gouge in all the fingers from the failed bearing...and the friction plate is worn almost to the rivets...and the yoke has a groove worn in it...and the u-joints are stiff...
And anything with "Corvette" in the nomenclature costs twice as much as any other make part...

Definately sounds like a throw-out bearing, dont drive that baby at all until you get it replaced, dont want to do any more damage than has been already done

Haha, I've been there before. My last 1996's transmission self destructed, after going through two cylinder sets. $1000+ parts and labor each time for the master and slave, $4500 for a new OEM transmission, clutch and flywheel

No, it's just the only car of that era that uses a 11" clutch. The 84s came with a 10.4" clutch like everything else and those are dirt cheap. 99% of the time the prices are inline with production numbers and part design. Check a wheel bearing assembly for example on any other car.
Anyhow, the t/o bearing can chirp if it's not free to move on the input snout. It's probably shined up the pressure plate fingers by now and that's where the noise is coming from. If this is the case you could buy some time by cleaning out the snout and getting some lube on the front of the bearing, through the hole in the bellhousing without even pulling the trans. Worked for me until I changed the clutch out.

Its sounding more like your clutch is shot if it's shuddering. A slipping clutch will cook the throwout bearing too.
If you have at least 3 limbs and most of your fingers you can change a clutch. We can walk you through it on here. It was one of the first things I did on my '85 with very little mechanical ability. Get all the parts first and set aside two weekends to play it safe since it's' your first time.
It'll cost you about $250 this way, including the tranny jack. What's a shop going to charge you? (And how long will they take to get it back to you? And will they do it right?)
