I've got a 92' How does one change the rear wheel bearings?
I have the tools but don't see how you get at the 3 tork bolts that hold the bearing on. I can get the tool on the bolts but can't get any leverage to break them loose. Is it possible to do without a lift? Thanks
Rick
You can get the car up on Jackstands and do it. Youll need to stick the trans in neutral and rotate the half shaft "just right" to get your socket in there. You may need a longer extension or use a 1/2" drive with a reducer to get the leverage you need. Kind of a pain but doable. I think I pulled each muscle in myneck straining on mine.
Like the man said, its doable, just find the neo sporin and bandaids first. If you have the same misfortune as myself and the torx bolts are already messed up a 9mm allen socket can be driven in to remove them. The bolts are still available from Chevy for 6 dollars ea. the part number is #14046943
good luck.
I think its a #55 tork socket. soak bolts from other side with any kind of penetrant "it will help" . use a breaker bar do not use air tools or you will strip the bolts. once you get them broke loose the job is easy.
A little tip that worked for me is that the TOP REAR torx on each side were much easier with extensions almost back to the pumpkin. The other two are a PITA, but for some reason, to me this one is the worst.
Long extensions to me made this one quite a bit easier..
BTW, I did these a couple months ago. Had a little problem with one torx and a halfshaft; my left thumbnail is still not it old self
Use a longer breaker bar or hold the wrench while someone else pushs with their leg. I had to take off the tie rod to get enough room for the top rear bolt. I used 1/2" drive tools.
