Does the check engine light come on when the key is in the "on" position?
Your saying the engine will start running now but runs the same?
Just to clear something up. There is a difference between cranking and starting.
Cranking is the engine turning over when the key is in the crank position.
Starting is the engine getting the necessary fuel, spark, air, and compression to run on it's own.
it will crank and run idle if I give it gas but will not idle on its on, if you try to drive it , it will start spitting back and sputtering and will not go like it is out of time or something,,,,
OK, that helps. There are a few things I can think of to check with no codes. Check the fuel pressure and check the coil wire for spark while cranking. The coil wire can rub against the water pump bracket and actually cause it to ground and intermittant spark.
The coil wire is attached to the ignition coil located on the passenger side front of the engine. It goes from the coil to the opti spark. It passes through the water pump bracket/housing. Not hard to see.
When was the last tuneup? Just trying to rule out things before pointing fingers at the opti spark.
not sure about the last tune up I have had it about 8 months and have done nothing but change the oil. Kinda strange though just came out one day after work and it started that spitting and sputtering and poping back like it was out of time
The LT1 (92-96) are computer timed. You can't adjust the timing like on the HEI distrubitors. Have you checked to make sure you get adequate spark at the spark plugs. Easy to do using a spare plug. A timing light can also be used but will not show how far the actual spark goes.
Yep, if the engine will start and run with tapping the gas pedal, that means there is some spark. Get a spare spark plug, take off one spark plug wire at a time, insert the spare plug in the wire and hold the wire with the tip of the plug about 1/2" from the exhaust manifold or nearest ground. Have someone turn the engine over and you should have at least 1/2" bluish/orange spark that snaps. It should snap repeatedly as the engine turns. If you hold the plug itself, you will be shocked. Test all 8 cylinders.
Something else to try is, use some starting fluid and spray in the throttle body while someone cranks the engine. If it will run ok with the starting fluid, then you have a fuel delivery problem and you can skip testing the spark.
I tested all 8 cylinders and am getting fire on all checked the coil wire and it looks ok,,,I can start the car and it will idle but if you try to drive it it just pops back and spits and will not go....errrrrrrrrr
