It doesn't really matter all that much as the rings spin in the ring lands once the engine is running. They won't stay were you put them. What's important is that the rings are installed with the correct face up.
There is one correct way to stagger the gaps on the rings. The stagger depends on which side of the engine (thrust) you're working on and when done correctly provides the best oil and compression control.
Don't skip this important detail. Grab a book that shows the correct positioning and spend the few minutes it takes to do the job correctly.
Jake is correct.The odd bank needs the top ring gap oriented in the up position.The even bank start with the top ring gap at the bottom of the piston.Install the oil scraper rings as shown in the instructions that come with the rings.When rings are ligned up on diassembly it is a good indication the lands on the pistons are out of limit.
