Default How to drain differential ????????

Thought I woulld check the fluid in my diff. tonight. Found it over full. No wonder gear oil was blowing by my pinion seal.
How do I drain the rest of the gear oil without removing the rear plate etc...

Well.... there is no drain plug, so you will have to march on down to a hardware store or autozone (something to that effect) and pick up one of those $10 pumps to suck it out of the fill hole. Basically it looks like a grease gun, except there is a hole on one end you attach a plastic hose to, and a handle you push/pull on the other end. :)

Isn't the fluid supposed to be level with the hole on level ground? Can't you just pull the drain plug and let it flow out?

Thanks you helped me remember that I have one of those pumps. I use it all the time to put gear oil in my truck. I wasn't thinking straight after I pulled the level inspection plug and had oil flowing everywhere.

I use a Mity-Vac pump and the fluid transfer kit sold by Eastwood Company. Works great and you can tell how much fluid has been removed from the rear axle assm.

As Scorp508 said above, there is not a drain plug on the rear axle housing. The fluid must be sucked out or the rear axle disassembled. I think it might be easier to suck it out. :D :D :D

Is the lube supposed to come out the seal even if it is overfilled? I don't know but I'm wondering if you have a bad pinion seal. Anybody know more about this than me? (hahahahah, of coarse there are millions of you frantically trying to respond right now)

Will over filling the rear differential cause it to leak? In a word- YES. If overfull leaks can occur at any of the seals or vent due to foaming of the fluid. Pressure can build up in the differential and actually push fluid past the seals. This can occur quickly if driven at highway speeds.

Well I sucked the remaining oil oil out today. Now if my lower water hose shows up I can see if the leak is gone. Thanks for the replys.
