I have pulled the motor twice. But this time i just want to remove and replace the heads. Is it preferable/a huge PITA/ to remove them with the motor in the car?
Even worse, We are planning to use head studs. Due to placement angles around the power brake booster, etc. Is it possible to have the room to install heads with studs in the block?
the removal of the heads is easy once all the wiring and intake are removed, but the head studs will have to be installed after you place the heads on the block.
If you really want studs, and for a TPI engine that won't rev much over 5,000 RPM, it's overkill, you can put regular head bolts in it to locate the heads, just don't torque them to over 50 foot pounds so the gaskets aren't fully compressed. after you get the center studs in, I would start pretorqueing the studs in the center, and then add the rest of the studs. Just double nut them until they look about right,(premeasure block deck thickness and screw the studs in until they are into the water jacket) then remove the top nut, then torque the lower one.
I replaced the heads in my 86 with some from an 88, and if you drape towels over the tires, they make pretty easy to sit on chairs until your back gives out.
on the side that u want to remove the head undo the engine mount bolt, then use a floor jack to push on the oil pan (use a block of wood or something between them) that will tilt the engine up on that side. that will allow u to do what u want
