Default 86 digital dash problems

I have a friend that has a 86 corvette and is having problems with the digital dash. Here is what he says
"I have one with a digital dash...it has the oil temp./ pressure guage. Apparently, there has to be a short somewhere 'cause it keeps switching back and forth from one reading to the other...seems while this happens the altenator spikes and the radio goes on and off"

Any suggestions on where to look for the problem?
thanks for any help!!!

Check your ground connections on the back of the block.

Both sides.

I don't see how that could have anything to do with grounds.

Maybe your alternator is giving voltage spikes to the dash? How do you know the alternator is spiking? The volt reading goes up? I wouldn't trust the volt guage if you can't trust the cluster.
