Default Stacked Plate Tranny Cooler install (pics)

Thanks for everyones advice on the stacked cooler...

I went with the B&M 11"x10" stacked plate design.. I custom fabricated brackets to make sure it sat +/- 3/4" off of the condensor (it does not touch it at all) and about +/- 1/2" off of the top housing..

The weird thing about this cooler is the air doesn't pass straight through.. It is deflected at about a 30* angle as it goes through the cooler.. so to get the airflow right the fitting lines face the opposite side of where the tranny lines are.. I wanted a clean install and worried about chaffing etc.. with using just rubber lines.. so I hard bent some brake lines... Getting the correct fittings for this was a trick.. but after several trips (lots of trips) to the hardware and auto parts store I finally got everything I needed.. Feel free to ask questions.. I'm not sure how much this will help.. but you can feel a big temp difference between the intake and the exhaust lines!! I bought a gauge to install but I dont think i'm going to.. the A-piller pod mounts just dont do it for me.. and besides.. its not like I could do anything to make it any cooler...

Oh and this cooler runs in series with the radiator tranny cooler.. (first the fluid goes through the radiator and then through this cooler)..

Wow, looks much better than my install (I may go to hardlines like your install, although its been two years and no leaks with the softlines)

Very nice! I'm about to do the same this or next weekend. one question, where/how did you attach the top of the cooler?

I ran two 1" custom brackets from the bottom to the top.. At the bottom (as you can see in the pic) I bent them at about a 120* angle and bolted to the existing support.. at the top I bent them around a 2" dia pip to make a 180 bend with the strap and it fastened to the fiberglass shroud (which is under the air cleaner housing). I used large body washer to distribute the load.. it worked great.. this is the only was we could get that size of a cooler in there, not block airflow and not have it touch any of the other stuff down there.. (does that answer the question)? If not I can sketch something up for you..

Did you hook it up in series with the radiator?

It's nice having the radiator there to keep a minimum temp in the ATF.

Here is how I mounted mine.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...ghlight=tranny
It has plenty of room as it's not mounted to condenser. works great.

How many degrees cooler is the temp? Did the radiator temp increase a couple of degrees because it is in front of a/c condensor blocking some of the rad?

The engine dosent seem to run any cooler (or any hotter) since the install... I dont have a tranny temp gauge hooked up so I cant quantify the results in that regard..

Did you use the digital gauge not the analog to check the radiator temps?I probably will add a cooler as my (95 LT1) runs about 194-197radiator temp and tranny temps sometimes (hot days,at a traffic light) may reach 218-225 degrees with a stock thermostat (180) and Dewitt radiator.thanks for the info.I would love to know your trans temp but you do not have a gauge.very nice install

The B&M instructions are poor... but they put a warning on mounting it upside down . The fig. on the instructions says to install with the inlet/outlet UP or turned 90° deg (not upside down).

used both gauges.. 183 on the highway and 193 in stop and go in florida at about 94* +/-90% humidity..

no trans temp yet.. I'm still on the fence if I want to add that guage (i already have it but think the a-pillar pod looks hoky)..

I made a thread awhile back about that:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...ght=track+data

The temp is still a bit high. I have been thinking of adding the Derale pan with the cooling tubes. It also needs a fan on the cooler or a fan to blow on the car between sessions as the temp does not really go down. Next season will be a better test when I run in the heat of summer instead of fall and spring. I'll be adding an oil cooler and PS cooler.

I used a smaller B & M stacked cooler for my engine oil. I mounted it behind the fans and it works very good there.
