I just got my corvette on the road after a year, first stop was a well known national chain tire/repair shop to have the 100 point inspection, brakes flushed, oil changed, and tires rechecked & balance wise. Everything done and over with I started to drive the car to school and rare occasiion to work. I put 50ish miles on the car since the work. Well I was doing some running around, I came home and had the hood up because I was chasing a maf burnoff code relay. Well I ran up to the parts store then back home. I popped the hood and heard unusual very quiet thunk thunk thunk thunk thunk etc. so i ran around the car pulling my hair out "what the heck is this thunking!?!?!" then I shut the car off checked the oil. I did notice it had stopped burning oil on start off about 25 miles ago... and now it was smoking on start ups again since the parts run well I decided to check my oil.. it was about a quart and a half low.... ....ok so I start freakin because 1. the oil was low. 2. I started to think the thunking was something internal.... well... I wuickly added oil. the shop said "88 takes conventional" and that's what they put in... so I grabbed some oil and put it back to normal levels.
#1. I havent figured out why the car started to smoke after it stopped...any ideas?
#2. The lcd's are burnt, So i've been runing off of the tach. if I got warm would it make the thunking sound?
#3. would a quart n a half low hurt it?
#4. also, how much oil does an 88 hold? The guy at the shop said only 4 quarts.
#2 Don't see how an lcd could make a sound of any kind.
#1. I doubt it ever stopped.
Sometimes an engine will make some noise as it cools especially if it got real hot but not overheated.
#2 I meant the Lcd for the gauges is sun burnt, and was wondering had it gotten really warm would it cause the thunking
#1. Well it had stopped on start up. then today started again. I know this because upon start up it used to give a puff of white smoke, then there was no longer a puff of smoke at all on start up. but you are prossibly right. the car had been sitting for a while tho and the valve seal prolly dried out. If it continues then it will make a trip to the shop for new seals
I also, get what your saying about the engine cooling. But this was with the engine running and it was very faint. after it cooled off I started it again and it didnt make that thunking sound again..... hopefuully I got lucky
Just another example of the shotty work out there that some of these places do!! Man that chit really pi$$e$ me off...a quart and 1\2 low.
Really though, if ya must take any car in for oil and other simple maintence, always, always, always check the oil before you start the car. before you leave THEIR parking lot, and preferably with one of their "TECHS" there. I've seen so many smokers and oil trails leaving their lots it ain't funny.
