I had valve train noises that I couldn't figure out too. I dont' know how many times I put the stethascope to it. Seemed to sound different every time, but was mostly coming from one side nearest to the front. I even pulled the vavle cover once to try to adjust them, and couldn't find any rockers that seemed to need adjusting.
I finally tore it down to replace the entire valve train with some good stuff and found the problem. One of the keepers had slipped out of the groove in the top of the vavle stem. It was up against the rocker, which was keeping it from coming completely out. I consider myself very lucky it didn't let go and drop a valve into the cylinder.
I hope this isn't what your noise is because the only way to find it is to pull the rockers off. But it is something to keep in mind as you try to diagnose the noise. Good luck with it.
I've got some valve train noise too... I know my noise isn't completley normal, but these engines are loud compared to a lot... especially those injectors!
Curtis, when are you going to put those roller rockers on? I am trying to finish mine up this weekend. As I recall, the inside of your motor didn't look too good. Mine has almost as many miles as yours (125K) and it looked almost new when I opened it up. I guess the previous owners always used Mobile One. Here's a not so good pic under the valve covers:
I remember reading that the 93 and up LT1 switched to composite valve covers to help muffle some of the valve noise. Some of it might be injectors making the noise.
Yes they did! Due to numerous owner complaints that the engines were noisey and they thought the valve train was messed up. I've got a 92 and it has some noise. It's had it since it was new. It now has almost 80K on it. The Ceramic ones came out in 93 and hid most of that noise.
