question about switching to a carb setup on my 84. whats the safest way to wire up the fuel pump? and what's a popular pressure regulator for the swap? Please dont ask why I want to do it, i've been over that several times.
If you need to ask about an 84-carb switch you can PM me, Happy Dad, AZC4, or one of a number of carb guys. Run a search on carbs or something and there are threads out there (although a lot seem to end up locked). To answer your immediate questions, I am running a Mallory 4307M regulator. You just need to find some kind of return-style regulator adjustable from 5-20 or so. The Mallory piece is a great regulator, but it's expensive to plumb cause it uses AN-8 fittings.
Wiring the pump...a lot of people just leave it alone. It will work without altering the wires. Trackman44 sent me a wiring diagram to eliminate the ECM from the pump circuit. If you want to do it I can eMail you the same diagram. I'm taking the ECM out of the equation as well.
What carb/manifold/cam/etc are you going to run? The stock 84 cam is really small. A nice cam, 650cfm Carb, and Weiand Stealth (my new favorite manifold) are a good way to go. Good luck.
I have an '86 with a carb... I used the stock pump and had no issues with wiring at all, I just swapped in a lower pressure '84 vette pump and used a holley regulator and some an -6 fittings
i was thinking an edelbrock performer manifold and a performer 600 manual choke carb. i hear they run great consistantly and are easy to set up. i dont know much about my engine unfortunately. I was told by the previous owner that he replaced the original L83 with a new 383, but i dont know the exact cam specs. it doesnt really lope when it idles so it cant be too big. thats another issue w/ the crossfire, even if i figure out the ignition issues, the ECM still wont be optimized for this engine, and there arent a whole lot of people who know how to tune those eprom files. i could get a newer style pickup tbi ecm and have different connectors soldered into it, but that costs money too, and im not interested in learning anything about ecm tuning....
so, for those who dont touch the wiring and run a carb, you're just relying on the oil pressure switch to turn on the pump relay after you start cranking? thanks again
Any mods needed to the automatic trans when you make the swap?
The overdrive won't work because it's ecu controled you will need to control it with a solinoid kit or something ..I went to a manual valve body in the trans...Just another way

Nope. The oil pressure switch and the fuel pump relay are two separate, non-interactive devices. At no time does the the operation of the oil pressure switch affect the fuel pump relay operation and vice versa.
ECM tuning is not necessary for a decent amount of performance gain. My car has the stock ECM and the stick chip. It seems you have the wrong car. If you don't want to leave it stock, "and im not interested in learning anything about ecm tuning....", you should be working on something you CAN.
****UPDATE***** i found a tech tip on elkabong's page about excessive play in the throttle plate shafts. i went outside and looked at my throttle bodies.... sure enough if i pick up the linkage on the rear body the plate opens a good 5 degrees at least before the front one even starts to move. and it clicks like crazy up and down. thats probably what ive been chasing for 5 years. i just never had another car to reference against so i never considered it. im surprised no one on here thought of that. so if anyone reads this and isnt getting codes in their 82 or 84 but has erratic running conditions, check for play in your throttle plate shafts. thanks for the help though guys, appreciate it.
I have posted about worn throttle body castings, for mostly the L98s, but for the L83s, too, many times. However, I rarely mention it in fuel pump wiring threads.

Nonsense. While I agree they are old school, they're certainly not junk. The 427 in my '69 runs just fine with a carb, street or track.
I retained the TBI in my '84 when I turbo'd the engine. I dumped all that crossfire crap and its lousy fuel distribution, and put a larger two barrel 454 TBI and smaller plenum manifold on it.
On my 86,I am using the torker 2 manifold and 670 holley avenger carb and a medium grind cam, along with headers. As for the TV cable, I have found a web site that has execellent info on how to hook up this cable. Its very easy,I can even under stand it. The site is: Bowtie Overdrives.com Everything else has been a no brainer. Thanks
I use the Aeramotive regulator set at 7 lbs and the factory pump.
I use the holley kit for the trans kick down and cable holder that Jegs has ,Holley has everything.
You will have to use a switch hooked to the trans to engauge the tork converter.
You can use a Holley carb with electric choke and vaccum 2nd daries.
I also use the MSD box 6al and distributor MSD and plug it into the MSD box.The Air cleaner Jegs also has which is low profile. www.mauiscuba.net/carpics/fuelpics/2.gif
Super Pic's Keep em Coming ...I also forgot about 3rd gen .org..They have all the carb answers you could think of..helped me out alot...And the TV Cable placement is VERY important for the 700R4..... Unless you should go to a manual V/B which does'nt use it..But trans pressures get a little higher and that opens up an other door Either Way No Biggie.....Converting to "Old School Junk" is pretty straight forward
This is my "rat rod" Vette project.... the hole in the hood is for the C4R scoop (building a pan to work with the scoop openings). Definitely not for the purist or "diaper wiper".

I'm drawing a blank regarding the "C4R scoop". Got any pictures to let us know what your hood is going to look like? (I chuckled at the diaper wiper comment. )
