While doing some work under my car sunday,I noticed the rear spring (95 vert) was "splintering or delaminating" It is not too bad yet. Is this dangerous ? I think this was a composite spring-another "great idea from GM". Too bad they never did fully research the life of the spring under all different climate conditions. If I do replace this will I have to lower the back ?
thanks
I really don't know the severity of the de-lamination so it is hard to say how dangerous this might be. Changing the rear spring on my 86 was very easy, just drop spare tire, use a floor jack to hold and take pressure off spring bolt, remove nut, lower jack and tension is relieved, repeat process on other side. Four bolts connect spring to differential carrier, remove all four bolts and spring falls out. Make sure to mark shims so you know where they go upon re-installation. Call Vette Brakes and Products @800 237 9991, they are manufacturers of replacement composite springs for vettes ,they will be able to guide you to the proper spring and tell you of how dangerous your problem might be. Good luck.
Replace it as soon as possible. Not a hard job at all. As noted be aware of the position of the shims so you can put them back in the same place. No need to lower the spare tire.
I had mine completely break on me, it's not a severe problem, but you'll know it when it happens because you'll be bottoming out over every bump in the rear. Get it replaced when you can, and take it easy on the car until you get it replaced.
I didnt think it was a bad job to replace the spring either. But when mine when bad it was cause there was a exhuast leak-- it was blowing on the spring.
Good Luck
