and do the make a motor's life go down

yes, they are worth it.

If done properly you probably you may or may not notice the life of the engine go down. However, if the engine has problems this will make them worse.

THey are worth it as long as you don't let it detonate. You may need help tunning it properly, otherwise you will lose your motor. Ask me how I know. There are less expensive super charger set ups, and perhaps some that may push more PSI if you need/want. Greg at blowerworks.com is the person to talkto. It's more complicated than just bolting on a supercharger.
