I was just a little curious about my timing chain cover gasket. Right now it is on there without any sealant or such. I can easily remove it and put some sealant on it. What if anything should I use? The water pump gaskets are the same material, they never leak when put on dry, so do I even need anything on the timing chain cover. It just seems like anything I put on there is just going to make a mess and not really help anything.
One thought I had, they make some stuff that you can spray on a gasket, just to make it tacky, I think this is more or less just to make it stay on your parts while you assemble them, with the pins on the block for the timing cover it is held in place and I don't need that.
The whole point of me taking it apart is to stop an oil leak, so I sure don't want it to leak again. Like I said, it is together dry now, and I don't THINK it will leak. What would you do?
Everytime we put a timing chain cover on a engine we but clear silicon on the block and then on the gasket when it is on the block, we dont put much on it.
I uased silicon on mine, i was going to be sure i cured all leaks during my job. i used the sealant gm call for for the intake manifold leak problem. used this on my oil pan as well. and not a single leak!! i am happy about it!
I usually use this orange ultra high temp sealer on my intake and it doesn't leak. Should I use the same stuff in conjunction with my timing cover, if so both sides, one, what?
When you say silicon? I've got clear 100% silicon (as in caulk) surely that's not what you are talking about.
Nathan,
Yes I normally use a little sealant on thin paper
gaskets, I like black permatex on this type, but
anything that will take the heat should be ok.
As you know in a perfect world the surface of
the block and cover are perfect , I just
like a little insurance. Btw the spray stuff is great for
just what you stated,I use 3m headliner spray glue
all the time,I think felpro makes something just for gaskets
though. Good luck.
