I have been trying unsuccessfully to fix my overdrive. Here is what I have done so far: replaced 1,2,4 gear switches, od relay, filter screen and checked the console switch. I have been following the manual and could use some advice on a few things.
1. If the "overdrive engaged" light is coming on as it should, does this lean towards an internal pressure problem, switch or pump?
2. Is it ok to bypass the pressure switch in the valve body? How do you test the pressure switch?
3. Can the OD solenoid be triggered using 12V to check if it is working while driving? (I don't feel comfortable raising the drive wheels while the car is in 4th and checking resistance under the car!)
Re: could use some help on my overdrive ("84" 4+3 coupe)
The OD solenoid can be triggered with 12V, but you have to bypass the pressure switch to do it. This is obviously done with the pan off. You could replace the pressure switch since you've done everything else already. Have you visited http://www.gearzone.net/ ? You need to and check the archives.
