Default LT1 intake on L98

I just picked up an lt intake to have monified and put on my 85. Is it really worth the trouble? Am I better off on sticking to the TPI?

Just looking for some opinions

Also who is doing the mods? I heard Lt1intakes is no longer doing them.

Thanks
Gary

If you want more power, it is definitely worth the effort.. Stock TPI is quite restrictive.

Check on he Camaroz28.com Forum. There's a guy there named Bret Bauer who may still do them. If not, he/they can point you to someone who does.

What cam do you recommend if all else is stock, inc. A4 and 2.73 rear?

What about with heads flowing, like 215 int.@.500, 3.07 rear and free-flowing true dual exhaust..?

Cam choice depends on alot more things, what are you looking for from the engine? Bear in mind that an 85 remains hyd. flat tappet, not a roller cam.

I would take the LT1 intake over the TPI in general, but that also depends on what you want from the engine.

If your gonna put an LT1 intake on there its beneficial to have higher gears like 3.54 or even 4.10 but thats if your really serious. This will help it get to the power band quicker. 2.73 kinda sucks even for TPI, i've got a 3.07 in mine which is supposed to be good for it.

I particularly like the Lunati Voodoo cams, but like Vader said it can vary quite a bit.

An decent machine shop could do the mods. Not rocket science if they have a stock manifold to work off.

Drill 2 holes for water outlets , machine intake for dist and redrill intake bolt pattern.

I've got the chevy cad files for a stock intake if you need the measurements.

Keep in mind LT1/4's have a different bolt pattern.

Also a miniram is always an option, just a little more $$$

I got my LT1 intake conversion done by Adams Holzhouse, (Sp) who lists on ebay. He did a pretty good job as we have found so far.

Issues so far: throttle line and TV line shortened; location of external T-neck; ECT sensor fitment, grinding the intake bolt holes, fuel lines, coolant hose routing, vacuum lines. Most all of this is described on www.lt1intake, as well as various forums such as third gen , camaro z28

LT1 vs. L98 depends on what you want.

L98 is all done by 4500 rpm

LT1 is just waking up at 4000 and loves to go to 6500 rpm.

Look at the whole package and match the intake to the rpm's you are looking for.

will never go back to tpi...have an lt1 intake presently on a 355 ci and previously ran one on a 406 (sold the whole thumper, actually a 400+o.040 = 409 for an offer i couldn't ref, cookin a new one)...like a totally different car with the lt1 intake vs the tpi on both...you can shift the tpi when it ''flattens out'' but with lt1 intake be careful to NOT over-rev, things happen sooooo much faster.

local shop was doing the conversion, numerous improvements from typical other set-ups... stopped, but grapevine sez they're back...will advise if you'd like.

This is something I seriously intend on doing after I do either heads and cam or a full rebuild.

I like the L98 TPI with my 3.54 gears because it gives instant gratification. Lots of torque. I don't know how changing to a LT1 will effect your toque curve... but in my 96 Impala, with the LT1 it only starts to wake up around 3500 even though the car is supposed to make it down low.

Maybe some of you guys could chime on what happens to torque and horsepower curve.

In any event, I think a set of gears would be much more beneficial,... I like my 3.54's
