96 vert a4 105k miles
There are lots of things that could make that light up. You need to actually find out what code got set, so you'll know where to start.
The light came on because one of the sensors detected an out of range condition. I believe AutoZone will read the codes for you for free.

yes there is. and it's easy. do you have a factory service manual (FSM)?
If so, look for the Central Control Module section (in our 94 FSM it's section 8D). The first section or two discusses the 'diagnostic mode' and how to engage it (on our 94, it indicates grounding pin #12 of the ALDC connector (under the driver side dash).
HOWEVER, since yours is a 96 and has both the OBDII connector and is OBDII compliant, I am resonably sure it will be different pin grounding on yours...
If you don't have a FSM, check the tech section, or do a search to find how to do it.
Just a guess on your check engine light. How about just a little bit of water/condensation that was in the gas tank. This activated the check engine light in my 96 LT4, not driven enough for sure. Anyway went to Auto Zone and the code was for the front drivers side oxygen sensor. I kept driving the car to see if it would develop another stumble. Was really surprised when driving down the road the check engine light just went out on its own. Like I mentioned, don't drive the car enough, so to really check it out I removed the gas cap filler neck/fuel pump so I could do a visual inspection inside the tank. No moisture. This happened last year, still not driving it much, did put about 800 miles on it last month on a trip, no problems. To my knowledge without a scanner, you are not going to get any codes like earlier Corvettes out of a 96 Corvette OBDII. My 96 LT4 was bought new and has not had a tune-up yet with about 38K on it now. Only thing that has been changed is the coolant.

For the sake of review, the old school jump the pins doesn't quite work well on the ODBII equipped 96's... the codes are just too damned long to work with. You can't read them on the speedo, and at 3 and 4 digits, reading them by flash is a pain in the ***.
with that said, the random misfire can mean any number of things. do you know the specific code? P-what?
Now... if at 105k miles, it is still running (by some miracle) with the OEM plugs, I would swap them out. The stock Delco Platnum Plugs are JUNK. Utter and complete JUNK. They have these little platnum pucks on the ground strap... it falls off... or burns off, who knows... either way, it's gone, and the gap grows from .050 to .065. That can easily cause a misfire. And ODBII is so much more sensative about it.
