Default No Reverse After Transmission Filter Change

Hello Forum, As usual I have to make an easy job hard. I felt like messin' with my car so I decided it was about due for a transmission filter change. Everything went pretty normal, I made sure I got the old O ring out and fully seated the new filter. I then put the new gasket and pan on and put in 4 quarts of tranny fluid. I ran it through the gears (including reverse) then put it in park and checked the fluid level. I still needed another quart so I shut off the car, put another quart in and started her back up. I ran it through the gears again and this time the gear selector seemed to slide right over reverse without engaging. All the other gears feel fine.

What could I have screwed up to prevent reverse from working?

Ron

PS it's a 1988 Z52 Auto

Did you use any type of sealer on the gasket, or did you install it dry?

I put a very small film of "the right stuff" in spots to make the cork gasket stick to the pan. Last time I did this job I had a heck of a time keeping the gasket in place while reinstalling the pan.

Here's some more diagnostic info. I just drove her around the block and she drove normally (except no reverse). I parked back in the garage and noticed the car will still roll if I push it, even with the car in park (engine off).

Default Problem Solved

Well I figured it out. Chalk it up to agressive pan removal. The control cable, underneath the rubber sheath or whatever its called, has two small tubes that slide in and out of each other kind of like a trombone. I apparently yanked on it a little too hard and pulled the end out of the bracket. Because its under the rubber sheath I didn't realize it. When I looked at it last time it was bent up like an inch worm. Hmmm, a clue. I took the rubber sheath off and the problem was obvious. I shoved the tube back in the bracket and reconnected the control cable. Now life is back to normal, except the back of my head is coated in transmission fluid.

Better to have transmission fluid in your hair, than 90 weight gear lube.
