Default Tire clearance advise

left off in title:please advise
I currently have 275 40x17s on my 88c4.
I would like to lower the distance from the top of my rear tire and the "wheel well "lip. I now have Potenza RE71's about 24.5 inches height(9.75 in footprint). The wheel well lip is 27.5 inches from the ground. That leaves a 3inch clearance of tire and fender lip.

I could lower the rear an inch or two or I could get a taller tire.
I dont want to lower the vehicle because my driveway is a 1.5 mile dirt road /seasonal wash w/large rocks all over road.

I know there are tire/fender contact issues to consider as I have delt with them in other vehicles in the past. Not being familiar with vetts, what kind of clearance is recommended that I might attempt below the 3 inch I now have?
I dont thrash the car in corners and take angular driveways, bumps very slow now. I've learned by the "hard way "method

My 94 was lowered 1.25 Front & rear before I got it. I switched to 17 x9.5 rims front and rear and 275/40-17s. My front right rubs on very hard dips or when cornering hard. The life has hit only once or twice. I have heard the frame body alignment on these things was not perfect, my shows that. The body looks great and lined up but obviously isn't. My 285s rub in the rear inside of the well when loaded and I hit a bump or dip.

Default RE: dchildress...Tire size on 17x9.5s

dchildress,
Hmmm, I do need to replace my rears and have been checking several brands of 285s,some listed in the tirebarn.
.
I wonder what the difference in height is when 275s or285s are mounted on a 17x9.5wheel.

I cant find the unmounted dementions to my RE 71's to compare, probably not sold new anymore.

What brand tire did you buy?
If you had to ,would you buy the same size again?
