Default Motor Mount Insulation

Friday night in preparation for the run up to the Petit Lemans I decided to replace my starter. I did not want the old girl to fail in front of all those shining C5's and C6's. While up under the car I decided clean up some things that hung too close to my headers!

I noted that the insulation around the motor mounts was too close to the headers. The headers were once uncoated and I have since had them Jet-Hot coated. The insulation was burnt from contact with the previously uncoated headers. The damaged insulation made contact with the headers. The look of it scared me. I removed the insulation. I understand that the mounts are oil filled. So here is the question... Did I open a can of worms? Has anyone else done this? Will they last like this?

PS: I will begin my search for solid mounts soon... I believe NitrousSam had a batch made awhile back. Anyone have a update on them?

Since you have a '94, the motor mounts are indeed oil-filled. The insulation keeps them from wearing out prematurely.

Unfortunately Sam's mounts were the earlier design. I actually bought a set and later realized they wouldn't work. He was talking about coming up with ones that will work on LT1/4 cars, but I don't think that's happened yet. The good thing is the design for a solid mount would be pretty straightforward.

Unless you totally trashed the insulation taking it off, I'd just re-wrap it and tie it up with stainless wire.

The insulation was totally trashed and some of it was charred pretty badly from contact with the headers. Hookers 2151 bu the way. The insulation could not be salvaged! I will need to come up with a B-plan to protect them.

Ive had headers and just recently ditched my insulators. I think it looks alot cleaner now. I don't think you need the insulators with headers as I believe they are there because of the cats that are normally near by. The cats get alot hotter than the headers. Just my opinion!

I may try it awhile without and check periodically. The MSD wires are just a half inch or so away from the coated headers and they are surviving. We will see what happens.

Anybody else with headers leave off the insulation? I pulled my insulation off today as it was falling apart. May just leave it off and keep checking mounts periodically.

Bringing this thread back. I agree you dont need the inulation. There are plastics near headers that last, ie Brake Booster.
Mine is tore up pretty good. I may use a header wrap, and steel wire it down.
At least it will look cleaner.
