Default Paint and Body Question

Hello, All Who May Know....

I'm painting a used Fiberglass roof panel to match my vehicle and I removed the metal edge moulding/chanel that goes around the 3 sides for prep.

The question is, should the panel be painted and the moulding be re-installed afterwards ... ? ...if so, what's the trick to get it back on over the new paint surface?

When I removed it, there was the original paint underneath, which indicates to me that the factory painted it first, then installed the edge trim, so I'm hopeful I can reinstall it the same way.

The painter wanted to mask the moulding off, but that's going to produce a very noticable masking ridge that I would like to avoid.

His concern is that the paint buildup around the edge will be chipped/cracked on the re-install.

Thanks in advance for your input.

put mine and two others back on the day after squirting, no probs...IIRC the design makes getting em back on much easier than removal, not much danger of chips unless you have a big ''build'' of paint...if you didn't ''strip'' it, sand plenty to reduce old paint thickness.

masking would leave a mess in this most visible location...molding fits so tight to fiberglass that paint will ''climb'' the molding.

I second that. Pull the trim, paint, and reinstall. It will last longer too, without a chance that you will catch the ridge of paint when washing it.

I didn't have any problems re-installing the trim after I re-painted the roof.

For the trim re install is it glued ??

Also what did you cover the bottom of the top with to prevent scratching..etc while working on it..?

did not use any glue...been a while since last trick, but IIRC the oem shows no evidence of any adhesive and did show ( IIRC, IIRC, IIRC) some inner gripping ridges.

i have a piece of 1/2'' plywood, cut to approx size of the top + a little...lay that on a couple of sawhorses and an old blanket on the ply for work (play ?) time...top lays painted side up ...use a small wooden block laid lightly on top of the roof panel, start at one end/rear, tap gently with hammer along an extended length of the trim (do NOT try to fully release in one spot, ''eyeball'' deformation of trim while removing to prevent ''kinks'')
