GARAGE FIND 1990 Vert HT with 384 miles
Found a 1990 Corvette convert. with factory hardtop with 384 miles on it. It has been sitting in a friends garage fot the last 17 years covered in dust. I need help finding out how to get the gas tank out. I pulled the sending unit out and found a half a tank of what used to be gasoline and now is more like lacquer thinner

A Helms shop manual is your friend in this endeavor.
IIRC You have to pull the rear bumper and a few other things that are obvious once the bumper is off.
you also probably want to remove the fuel lines and clean them out, maybe have the injectors rebuilt and replace the fuel pressure regulator.

Thanks; I just checked the flat rate book and it allows 7 hours to r&r the tank. This car is new in every way, but the tank is filled with rust. What a shame, looks like its going to be an expensive task.

It shouldn't be rusted,I believe there should be a bladder in it,unless the bladder was compromised.I'd try the flush and sphyon method first. For God's sake don't use a vacuum cleaner !!

I'd tow it home and start getting all the fluids changed. Brakes will need attention. Pull the sparkplugs for a look. I it were mine I would just pull the heads to clean the cylinder walls before turning it over but that will be a lot of work. You might get by squirting WD-40 in through the plug holes and turn it over by hand with a wrench on the front c/shaft bolt. The car is a valuable car if you take your time carefully checking everything and getting the mechanical systems back in shape to run again. A 380 miles car that has been in the garage all this time should clean up to look pretty good. Congratulations on your discovery!!

Thanks all: I will need a gas tank (twisted) this is full of rust and has several pin holes that are just beginning to leak; the sending unit/ pump assy. was solid rust. The car looks great after an initial rinse off, but it's going to take alot of time and expense to get it into shape. Let me know how much for the tank with shipping, unless you are close enough to Bakersfield for a pickup

Pics of 1990 VERT GARAGE FIND
Here are some initial pics; looks pretty bad in pics, but up close it's in pretty good condition; I will be detailing it soon and will post after pics. The owner may try to find a buyer prior to doing all the mechanical repairs, but at least a potential buyer can see the like new condition

Why has it been in a garage for 17 years?
Engine sieze or something, people do not leave a car sitting for 17 yrs unless there is something seriously wrong or the car is very unique.
