Default modifying valve covers

does anyone have pictures of modifying the drip tabs on stock 1989 L98 valvecovers for 1.6 roller rockers or really good step by step instructions?

I'm pretty sure my 92 magnesium covers are the same as yours. I used a Dremel tool and a small cutting wheel to cut them off. The Crane Gold Series self alligners fit nicely.

The drip tangs were designed to drip oil on the stamped rocker arm nut bearing swivel. Not needed with the roller rockers. I've run mine for about 20K and no problems.

Here's what a set of stock valve covers look like without the drip tabs, just to give you a better idea.

These were done using a milling machine - makes for a nice, quick, clean job! If you have access to one, I would STRONGLY recommend going that rought rather than using a Dremel.

And depending on which roller rockers you use, you may need to take off some material around the outside lower-half of the hold-down bolt cylinders, otherwise the valve covers won't clear the rockers. I don't have a picture of that but if you do a search, I'm sure you'll find one (I've seen a pic here before).

Good luck!

Yes, the you'll need to take the tabs off, and trim material off the webbing as described above. I clearanced mine for the CC rockers using a milling machine and had to take a lot more material out than you see in the picture. You'd be better off getting some of the composite covers. Those have much less material to trim, and are much easer to cut with the dremel tool.

hi scranage,
thanks for the reply !
i already have just brought my new edelbrock valve covers so im not going spend another $180 another set of covers.
so is the drip tabs in the pictures above where the shiny bits are ??
my covers dont have them at all,but have small little bosses where the allen key bolts come thru from the top to bolt on the finned show plates.
thanks

I just took a pair of vice grips, clamped them on really tight to the drip tab... and beat it with a hammer. Snapped them right off. Then I just trimmed the last litte bits with a dremel

Yes, the shiny part is where he plunged an end mill into the drip tabs. I also had to remove the webbing in the same area to clear the Pro Mags. And the breather duct thing was too wide. I had to just bend it back in to flatten it where it flares out.

I don't know what the deal is with your aftermarket covers. From your post it wasn't clear the Eldebrock part number you provided referred to valve covers, so I assumed you were asking about stock covers with the Pro Mag rockers.

I cut the drip tabs with a dremmel with a cuting wheel. I used comp cams rr. Worked fine on my 86.
