I am removing the A/C on my 1989 L98 and I need to know how everyone else has gone about doing the same thing. can I just go to a smaller belt and reroute it? thanks
hi kowalski340,
i have L98 91 model vette that i removed the a/c on.
makes it more easy to work on ,looks cleaner e.c.t.
ok i have delted the air pump, but still left top pulley for delete pump kit, fitted under drive 2 piece pulley kit, fitted csr electric water pump,
added a 6 rib gm 88 model Berreta idler pulley ,ran serp belt around the pulley instead, cut back a/c bracket for room for e/water pump installtion, the a/c bracket now has two bolts that bolt it to the head now,but works well though, then measured up and brought a good year gator back serp belt which gives a smoother/quiter better grip than the standrd 6 ribbed belts does and bam you are done.
If you need all the emission stuff. You can get an A/C delete pulley...This keeps every thing basicly the same just no A/C compressor...There on Ebay for cheap..easy to install
I have heard from the guys at Guldstrand Motorsports that all you need to do to remove the compressor is take it off and reroute a shorter belt. has anyone done this?

Looking at a picture of your belt routing it appears that you will need a pulley in place of your compressor. The tensioner is under your compressor and you must go across the top side of it.
Make sure you click the archives box when you do the search.
I have seen other guys run the belt over the tensioner instead of under.
Several good ideas and set-ups have been done.
I removed everything. My way is kinda strange tho. My tension adjustment is made at the upper alternator bracket. I slotted the top hole so it pivots on the bottom bolt and slides at the top.
Like the old school 70's cars.
Could you remove the compressor AND bracket, buy an '85-'87 bracket and the '85-'87 delete pulley? Just a thought - don't know how different the rest of the serp system is.

Ultimate way , swap to a normal rotation pump , do away with the tensioner and mod the alt for adjustment.End up with a serpentine belt version of earlier V-belt setup.
Std long pump works; need washers under pulley to align belt correctly

That's how mine is set up but the original poster needs to keep his smog pump.
Here's my version (1989). A friend helped me build the delete pulley which uses the stock a/c compressor pulley, so it uses the same belt and the routing is the same. Then I built a new bulkhead out of sheet metal to get rid of the a/c evaporator (or was it the condenser, I always mix the two up).

Reason: typo
hi guys again,
i also when orignally started modding my brackets gutted the a/c and left the a/c pulley and ran the serp belt of it but now just recently i cut back a/c bracket more and got rid of the pulley altogeather.
cheers
shae
I can't use it 89 is a different compressor setup but thanks anyway. doea anyone have the exact belt routing that they used after taking the compressor off and are not using a delete pulley setup
We just purchased a shorter belt and ran it over/around the tensioner and then back under the water pump. That kept the rotation going the right direction and everything worked fine.
