This has been going on for some time, First I had a code 44 lean exhaust and after a week of driving I got codes 33 and 36 the maf and the maf burn off relays
(it takes time for me to get parts thats why it took time to replace some parts)
I replaced both of the maf burn off and power relays no dice.... now I have replaced the oxygen sensor, Before I changed this my exhaust was real black, the sensor I took out was covered in soot, I reset the computer took it out for a drive the ehaust was clean no black smoke but right about the time I think I fixed this thing I th CES and its Code 44??? Im thinking my maf is jacked up what do you all think??
Im betting its the maf I still need to do the test withdisconecting the maf and seeing if the code still comes up..

Re: code 44...... (phrogs)
Are you obtaining closed loop? BTW, we are talking about the 89 here? If you are getting a lean code and the O2 is black then reasonable to believe that you are really rich, false lean problem. I would look for false air such as an exhaust manifold leak or a leak just where the front y attaches to the exhaust manifold on the drivers side. If changing the O2 made such a huge difference, then have to consider bad connections or bad wires.
MAF will not have a huge effect in closed loop, but will effect in open loop. Not sure if I understand if the code 33 and 36 came back after the relay change. Check that MAF connector, it can be problemmatic. If the MAF got water damage, it may be very hard to get it to work properly.
