My AC has not worked since I got the car. I live in a cool climate so I don't care. AC guts are taking up lots of space. I'm thinking about removing the whole system. Any words of wisdom when considering this. Belt routing? will it mess up the heating cooling system?
thoughts?
thanks for the vote of confidence RA! Now, how about some notes from experience, pitfalls? Link to an archive? I couln't find anything when I searched. How do I deal with the belt?
It is easy to remove the AC. If it still has the refrigerant in it take it to a shop to have it removed. Then all you have to do is disconnect the lines from the compressor to the AC condensor and evaporator and remove these components. Also remove the line going to the fire wall where the heater core is located. The electrical connectors to the compressor and the AC line can just be disconnected and tucked away. If I remember correctly there are only three connectors. One needs to be jumpered so your radiator fan does not stay on all the time. If your corvette is a 1988 like mine you will need a pulley placed where the compressor used to be. Some people reroute the belt over the tensioner but I don't like that idea. I made my own bracket with a pulley on it to go onto the bracket where the compressor used to be. You can find a pulley on EBAY but the bracket it comes with does no fit the 1988 corvette. I just used the pulley and made a custom bracket. Now the AC is gone and the reduction in weight freed up more horse power.
Thanks RF! Nothing better than the voice of experience. I'm driving a 1990 so I will have similat belt tension issues. Reversing the tensioner routing didn't seem like the right thing to do to me either- pulls on something that was designed to push. Anyone else?
