I drove in to work today and went to take the keys out of the ignition, and my ignition switch won't go back into the "Lock" position so that I can get my keys out. It seems to back far enough to turn all the accessories off, but I can't get it to go all the way so the key will release (hence the keys are in it in the parking lot, fun). I didn't try to start the car again and turn it off again because I am afraid to fool with it too much unless I'm at home for fear of stranding myself somehow.
Has anyone experienced this and is there a fix other than replacing the ignition switch? And is really that hard to do? I am sure that switch has about 100000 starts on it (it's the original) so I'm not surprised. (PS this is an 87)
Any help is appreciated!

Automatic trans? It's happened to me. Wiggle the shift lever in park to where the shift button pops up fully. Sometimes it sticks and you can't turn the switch back to remove the keys.
I believe there's a cable that goes to the shifter (manual and auto) that controls this and there's an adjustment for it. Probably stretched the cable just a bit.
Ok, so I am a blooming idiot. Yes, it was not all the way in park, or that was the issue. I jiggled the shifter and keys came right out. Silly part is that I know this....I guess I just pushed the panic button too soon.
But seriously, thanks for your help, now I can enjoy my day without worrying!!
