Default GM Crate Motors

I'm looking in to one to replace in my 94.

Any experience's out there?

Is there other options than a GM Crate especially if I'm in California & have to consider emissions?

I would check with engine rebuilders. You could stroke it and add a good set of heads and cam for less than the cost of a crate engine. Just leave all the smog crap on.

I have the "base performance" 330hp Vortec head long block in my '85. Using the SDPP adapter base manifold for the TPI fitup (and Edelbrock runners, BBK TB, etc..). It's all good, although the cam is rather obnoxious with the exhaust overlap it has. Still - nice performance upgrade over the stock L-98 and essentially a bolt in deal. Price for all of it is less than it would cost to machine and build an equivalent performance motor from used parts. And it even has a warranty!

Ca requires both a visual inspection (any visible mod must have an EO#) as well as the tailpipe test. Fortunately most small blocks all pretty much look alike, but the stock induction and stock exhaust headers still have to bolt up. Although I have not done it, I believe there are a lot of ZZ4 engines installed as replacements for the L98 with L98 induction and headers.

If you go with any after market stuff, be sure they have an EO# or you will have to change them out every other year. The Ca smog stations are very conscious of these rules as the state will fine them heavily or revoke their business licenses for cert'ing illegal cars. The good news is there are plenty of smog legal EO# parts out there.
