Default So ECM # have to match

I was told my the owner of Drago Corvette that if I wanted to get a back up ECM for my 84 4+3 that the numbers on my ECM would have to match the new one. Is that true.

Thanks,

Hugh

yes, they are specific to years and cars that use MAF or MAP based stradegy.
I believe some have converted from the early ecm to the 165, you would have to do a search.

MAF = Mass Air Flow
MAP = Manifold Absolute Pressure
Some systems use 1 or both sensors(1 as back-up) to adjust fuel trim.

MAP is basically a vacuum gage.

If you plan on working on your car, you are REALLY going to need a FSM.

check out the crossfire forum classifieds. or post a request there in the ECU subforum and request one. it needs to be transmission specific. do not substitute a 82 for 84. it will work but they are different.

many of us have upgraded and have no need for the stock one.

There is a ton that can be learned from the "84 shop manual", if it is a genuine FACTORY service manual. The generic books by Haynes, Chilton's, etc, are rather vague and general in their approach. The cover multiple years and some of the info isn't correct for all the years they cover. Besides the trouble shooting charts, the FSM explains how many of the systems work, and often, explain exactly what it takes to trigger each of the trouble codes. You can learn a lot, even when you aren't looking for help with repairs.

Those electro mechanical things sometimes can be easier to diagnose than a carb setup. To me a carb is voodoo mechanics. Every time I have attempted a rebuild a carb I had to take it off a few times because some little trinket got hung up inside. And I hate driving behind carb cars cause they smell like gas is pouring out the tailpipe.

Upgrade?

I started with a 8746 ECU from 89-92 F Body and sent it to Speedtronics.net to have the Prominator installed and adapted to mate to the Vette harness . That is an emulator or hardware that is permanently installed in the ECU. I can literally flash in a new .bin from laptop into the ECU in seconds. also was installed from Dynamicefi.com the EBL. Now it is no longer a GM8746 but an EBLGM8746 with expanded tables and a host of other goodies. It is now a better ECU 5X. it includes VE Learn which creates a new .bin as you drive from BLM or WB correction data(datalog). Good stuff. Take a peak at their websites.
