Hello just wondering if anybody can tell me the affect of removing my cats from a 92 Lt1 6 spd corvette. Will it turn on a check engine light? Will it affect power or gas mileage? I live in Canada and here there are no emission laws against this so I figure I would take them off this old car becuase they are probably slightly plugged. Thanks for the help.
The '92 LT1 is OBD-I, and doesn't have any O2 sensors after the cats.
I don't think there will be any noticeable difference without the cats.
You can check the backpressure of the cats with a pressure gauge upstream from the cats while "flicking" it to WOT.
That's the way I checked mine -- my '92 has the original cats and they aren't restrictive at all.
the only differance I would see is a slight change in the smell and sound of your exhaust. Since the cat won't be removeing anything, although at its age I wonder if it does anything now?
The 92 and later cats actually flow quite well so removing them while keeping the stock manifolds really won't provide any noticable increase in power. The exhaust note may be a bit louder. Your fuel miuleage figures shouldn't change.
Cats should really last the life of the car unless they get plugged. If there is something plugging the cats, you would see a slugglishness and probably a SES light.
Finally, even in Canada, the air needs to be as clean as we can make it. You may not have any emissions laws (yet) but IMHO, all of us need to be careful with creating excess pollution.
