My friend had the BCM replaced on her '92 and now the odometer shows zero miles. Her mechanic has had the car for 2 months and says nothing can be done to put the original 43,000 miles in. He said he brought it to a Chevy dealer and they agreed. Can't the mileage be entered with a GM Tech I tool within the first 100 miles? Does he need the original BCM to transfer data to the new one? Thanks.
I believe you refering to the ccm, that is my understanding that the dealer will re-program for milage. It would make sense they might need the original so they can verify the accuracy of the original miles etc.
If a new CCM is installed, it must be programmed with the existing vehicle mileage within 100 miles of driving. After that the CCM loks out any attempt to enter data. Whoever removed the old CCM should have taken not of the current mileage so it could have been re-entered in the new one.
A dealership can enter the data using a Tech-1 within that 100 mile range; after that, not gonna happen.
The CCM also holds the vehicle VIN so that would have had to be programmed in too. If the car has certain options like FX3, the new CCM would have to have that information too. The CCM hold trouble codes for a number of systems that are not related to the engine.
