when i bought he car this was broken. need to know what it is.

Looks like the CTS (coolant temperature sensor) that sends resistance signals, depending on engine temp, to the ECM.

If it is from the 1984 L83 engine, then it is called: 'sensor, clnt temp (ac/delco #213-52), GM # 10045847' -- based on my circa 2002 parts cd.
