Has anyone got an aftermarket stereo to be flush against the dash. I have a 95 vette and the guys at the store tell me that an inch away is as far as they can get it in. Anyone have any luck with this?
Mozot...when i put mine in....i could not quite get it in either.....i took my dash completely apart and used an old soldering gun out and melted away some inner plastic pieces within the dash. This will give you more depth.....NOTE !!!.....be careful though...the CCM is right there.....right behind all this stuff and you dont' want to damage it.....
my alpine had the same problem....but I got it in....if there is a will there is a way.....
this is how i customized my settup and got a head unit and dsp unit in that space and custom made a dash plate.....I will post a pic....

Re: Custom car stereo installation woes (mozot)
There is a small plastic piece that needs to be cut out in the rear of the hole. 1.5 isn't any wider than a single din. It's just taller. I got two single DINs in my car http://www.corvetteforum.net/c4/jeffvette//IM000313.JPG
Re: Custom car stereo installation woes (Jeffvette)
Jeff vette is exactly right...that is the piece I was talking about also...its in the way...I used an old soldering gun and melted it out and used dikes to trim it out.....like I said just be careful...the ccm is directly behind that plastic piece.....
oh...you aware of the sys problem associated with aftermarket stereos....?....you might want to check and be aware of this.....
sys might begin to flash in your cluster next to your gas gauge, this is a known problem....there is a tech tip on the forums tech tip list.....says you splice a pair of resistors in line to make the problem go away....my car every now and then blinks the sys then it goes away after like 3 flashes....and does not come back to often....for me....not a big deal....seein i never really see it.....
Re: Custom car stereo installation woes (XtremeVette)
Dont I need that piece back there? The 1.5 din's body actually didnt fit inside the area width wise. Maybe a 95 has a diferent interior setup for the radio.
I didn't have to cut out the back on mine. Everything fit just like the stock unit except for the part you see that comes out the face, but it was designed that way!
Thanks Scorp, you da man. I had the unit professional installed back in 92. The car was new and I didn't feel comfortable doing the install myself at the time. I think my SYS flashing was one of the first. The installer had never had that probablem and the local chevy dealer had no idea. The installer finally ended up calling the corvette action center at the plant and they gave him the info for installing the resistors to fool the ecm so it wouldn't set the SYS. They did have to do a very small amount of trimming on the back side of the coverplate so it would lay flush. :D
That looks really good, did you have to trim the piece around the radio to make it fit? Who did the install, you or did you pay someone?
Since there was a pic above this besides mine I'm not sure who you were asking. Since you replied from one of my posts, I'll answer.
The only thing I had to do to make the trim piece fit was to snip the lower corners about 1/8" - 1/4". It was a really tight fit. If it wasn't for the coating on the trim piece it probably would have slid on. Trimming the corners let me use the bottom edge kind of like a small hinge area that helps support everything. It kept me from having to file off the coating on the trim which isn't in the greatest of shape anyway.
I did the install myself. It wasn't easy. After talking with several shops around here, none of them sounded like they knew anymore about it than I did. I figured, why pay someone to do something and mess it up. I could save the money and if I made a mistake, then I only had myself to blame.............plus the money saved to fix it. Hardest part was getting all the wires from the adapter in back to the headunit up front.
