My LT1 started backfiring through the intake suddenly one day last week. I thought I had a blown head gasket, but the engine checked out ok with a compression check. I am replacing the opti spark, but I noticed there is sensor at the bottom of the timing chain cover... I believe it is some kind of crank position sensor, but I took the timing chain cover off and I don't see what is the triggering mechanism for this sensor. My engine is a 383 with a double roller timing chain..... I'm lost, Autozone nor Napa have the part in stock and can't even order it. Does anyone know what this sensor does or what symptoms it shows when it goes bad. I will say that I had a bad seal form the timing cover to the opti, so it had lots of oil dripping down on it.... thanks!
