fuel level problem

fuel level problem
I recently replaced my fuel pump. 2 tanks of gas ago. since the replacement, when I fill the car up with gas, the miles remaining on the atari read 322 miles , both times. (level is to the rim). it used to read between 430-440 miles on fillup.
the actual level is indicating full????
Is it possible, maybe a wire got wrapped around the float during install and not allowing float to go all the way up?
I am not concerned enough at this point to pull assembly out of tank, just curious to know if anyone else had a problem like this before?

The only time it happened to me was when the tank float rusted and would not read capacity in the tank. Wondered why I the computer said that I was getting 75miles per gallon.
Ended up replacing the entire unit and fuel pump.
