Hello,
My automatic 86 was rear-ended a couple weeks ago and my mufflers were pushed into my rear tires. That also damaged the Y pipe and a couple other small things. It turns out that I have $1469 to spend on new exhaust stuff all together, and I was thinking of getting a set of TPIS headers and a Borla Stinger system. The car doesn't have to pass emissions, so I was thinking of just running straight through w/ no cat(that'll show Al Gore!), but I have some concerns about how loud it will be. The car is daily driven, so a SUPER loud (Any louder than b&b bullets on a c5) system is not an option, but a bit louder is just fine.
Would a high-flow cat help to quiet this down? As far as I know there's not much to the Stingers, and with headers I'd imagine that it may be deafening. Any input would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!
Hello, it might not be as loud as you think, I have TPIS headers on my 85 with no cat or mufflers, just some older ANSA exhaust tips. It is surprisingly quiet, very low rumble, to prevent resonance make sure your exhaust tips exit out back of car not under it at all.
With the PEs open (like a straight pipe), its pretty loud. Definitely dont want to run it on the highway with them open. Closed, its bearable, so if you went with a nice muffler that isnt too loud on an otherwise stock car, then I think you'll be fine.
Using a high-flow cat improves power, but compared to stock will be louder. However, going without a cat entirely will be much louder.
I have Hooker headers, Borla Stingers and currently no cat conv (will install one later when I start driving the car). I've only driven the car a couple times-short distances like this and it is loud and the resonance is deafening throughout the car, I woulfd not recommend this combo for a driver.
