...As I was removing the lower portion of the TB, one of the bolts snapped off. Fortunately Greg was able to grab onto the part sticking out (after I removed the water jacket part of the TB) and got it out. I was upstairs tucking the kid into bed and he decides to get it out instead of letting me do it. :boxing Looks like someone forgot the anti sleaze on this last time it was apart (if ever). So much for having the '87 back on the road by tomorrow.... Hopefully the GM parts counter stocks these bolts since all the others were pretty nasty and corroded too. :boxing
Good Luck trying to get those lower torx bolts,I was unable to get those a few years back from GM.If you do manage to get them, please post the results.
GM sells what they call a TB kit, which will include a new IAC/coolant housing and every gaskets for the TB but the bolts arent included.
The closest ones I found were allen key screw head type bolt heads from a hardware store that carried them.
I forget the size but they were exact fit but not concours correct.
I too had a lower TB, IAC and coolant housing bolt rust and snap off on me and it had to be drilled and re tapped out.
Btw, I went to GM to buy new valve cover bolts(center torx bolt types) they didint give me the OEM torx ones, they gave me exact fit bolts or screws with 10 MM heads.
This was the part number they showed for my valve covers. They rechecked it several times.
Just thought id pass that along. If you ever have better luck, please post them.I wasnt going for a a correct concours resto but it would have been nice at the time to get the same exact style bolts or screws or at least be available.
When I rebuilt my 85 last spring, I snapped off one of the water outlet bolts right at the base. I messed it up so bad trying to get it out I finally drilled a hole all the way through the manifold, threaded the hole, put a bolt up from the bottom (would just clear the head), and put JB weld on the bolt and threads so it wouldn't back out. It worked, but I thought I was screwed.
Well, I'll find out when the truck shows up between 12-1pm today if the "TB Bolt Kit" from GM has anything close to original stuff or not. I couldn't find a part number either in my manuals, but Matt in Parts did. He ordered it. When I pick it up later today I'll bring the originals to compare. I'll let you know what turns up. My old one broke off close to the bolt head, so once I got that lower part off the TB there was still enough of the old bolt sticking out that Greg was able to get a locking wrench on it and work out the remains of the stud without damaging the TB. This of course was after he melodramatically pointed out the worst case scenario - take it to the machine shop, have them drill it out and helicoil in a new thread. ~Juliet
Jeff, I have *A* 90 degree fitting, so I'll be back up and running this weekend (in theory anyways). ;) It's perfectly functional, but not like the originals though, but Tony's Corvette mailed me out a new setup for it yesterday which should arrive today. They sent me a bunch of digital photos too when I phoned them earlier in the week! If what he's sending is like the original one with the little dot thing on one edge near the bend then I'm totally set. :) Otherwise, maybe if yours has the little molded dot like the originals, maybe we can trade? :D Thanks! ~Juliet
Juliet, I know you probably know whether the screw kit was right or not, but I bought one from my GM parts guy several months ago, was part no. 17112369, screw kit and listed for 19.58. Tapping on the torx socket will help get them loose. I had two break off and could not remove them. New throttle body has anti sieze on the new screws. Good Luck
The screw kit I purchased is GM #17110848. I don't know if this is a new number for the same kit which you purchased or not. However, the screws contained in this kit do appear to have identical configuration to the ones which I removed from my TB. Judging by the hoses & the clamps I don't believe the TB was removed from my car before. Or at least if it was, it wasn't disassembled or rebuilt. The kit was about the same price you quoted - I don't recall the exact retail price, and my local parts dealer gives me a Corvette Annapolis discount on all the stuff I purchase there.
Jeff, Thank you, but I think I'm all set. Tony sent me one which looks like the others (I'm presuming original) 90 degree bends on my car.
... I won't need a replacement.. My car will never be 100% original
Yeah, not to split hairs, but they're only original once. Mine included! What I'm trying to do is make it look EXACTLY like it did when it rolled off the assembly line back in 1987. :) Greg gets on my case when I start talking about factory sloppy weld seams and overspray. :jester I'll tell you though, the C4 so far looks like it's got fewer skeletons than the '70 - though that could be simply that I haven't logged the hundreds of hours working on it yet like I have with the '70. :yesnod: Thank you. :) It's folks like you who really make this forum great! ~Juliet
Juliet, I don't know about the rest of the fellas on the Forum, (and no disrespect to Greg) but just listening to your obvious mastery of the Corvette engine bay gets me real turned on!
You sound like one of my wife's girlfriends who used to own a Fiat X-19 and did all the work herself, too. She once talked about having to replace the timing belt and tensioner pulley seemingly every coupla' thousand miles or so and it was nothing short of pure nirvana for me. Cheers!

Me too. Where are the women who know about 'timing belts'? IMO, they would make the best girlfriend.
