Default Paging Juliet (Wiring Harness Replace?)

I noticed in several posts that you stated you are restoring your C4 to NCRS specs.

I'm encountering many front (engine bay) wiring harness problems, and since your car is almost as old as mine, I'm sure you are as well.

Have you looked into (or actually accomplished) installing a new engine bay wiring harness? I'm not too happy with all the splices I'm forced to put into mine; I'd like an idea how hard this replacement is; how much the new harness costs; and whether the engine has to be out to get it installed correctly...From someone who has already done it...

(My wires are all heat-fatigued and the insulation is cracking. Almost impossible to solder; and will no longer take a bend without breaking).

I might be able to help...

Which harness are you looking to replace? the engine contorl harnes or front body Harness?

The engine harness can be swapped while the engine is in the car. As far as cost.. I have no clue and I don't even know if they are still available

I didn't realize there were more than one...

...But it would be the one that feeds all the switches, sensors, etc on the engine; goes to the relays, fuses, whatever else...

I've seen them for sale at (for example) TPiS, for installing TPI systems in hot rods, boats, etc., but one specifically for my '86 would be preferable...

Most if not all of the wires in my harnesse are oxidized and/or heat-fatigued. Connectors are breaking apart; insulation is crumbling off.

It needs help!... :yesnod:

I'll give 18carfan an email...Maybe a harness is still available...(Right!)...

well,

as far as I know.. there is the harness for the Engine sensors, Injectors, etc,

then there is one for the lights and fans, horn and stuff. My guess is the engine harness is what you need. It may still be avail. I just bought a engine harness off of a 91 vette for my conversion I am doing. this harness looks like it is a brand new piece.. I was amazed..

Me, too - the price for the engine harness (in 1991) was $727.00...But Jeff Kopp says it's no longer available...(whew!)...

TPiS wants $595 for theirs...But it doesn't look like it has all the Corvette leads...

Anyone know of a boneyard that might have a '86 harness???

Rich, Sorry I didn't see your thread earlier. I haven't replaced the wiring harness in my '87. To tell you the truth, I haven't really researched what is or isn't to NCRS specs in my harness. They're just working on the '84 - '86 Tech Info & Judging Guide now. I imagine it will be at least another year before the NCRS documentation (aka specs) is available for the early C4s. I'm guessing the '87 TIM&JG will probably follow sometime later. I'd definately be interested in hearing what you find out with regards to suppliers who sell harnesses which meet the factory original specifications. :) There are a handful of us here in C4 who look at these cars with an eye for where the seams are, how the tape is wrapped, what is stamped on them an other purely cosmetic nits. :yesnod: Wish I could help, but I just don't know boo about the harnesses... yet.

Well, if it's an '86, you'll have to pull the starter...I found out this last week that there's a wire from the starter bundle that goes up to the temp gauge sensor and it has a clip that screws into the block...The clip is crimped around the wire, and you can just barely get to it *with* the starter out...

Other than that I'm still learning what has to come off...

The guy above has the harness and the experience you are looking to gain. He is very good and available when you call. By the way you need to determine if the harness is for a manual or auto tranny. He has the harnesses built to his specs and it will fit the vette perfectly. Painless wiring makes one but it is hell to pay to install it.

Good luck with your decision.

Tell Jim, J. T. Spilman recommends his work.

That conection isn't crimped around the wire in my Vette, so hopefully I am in luck. (I forgot to connect it to the block) I do have aftermarket headers so I have to pull the passenger header to remove the starter. BTW Does the harness connect to the starter?

...Mine does...Two big leads (like battery cable), and one smaller lead for the solenoid...Plus that sensor lead...

I haven't tracked all the connections for this harness yet, because I'm not sure the injector leads and injection sensor leads are part of it or not...

BTW: one of the guys in the Sale/Buy forum gave me another URL for new harnesses -
