I bought an engine yesterday and have pulled the oil pan off to check it out, anyway when I got in there the rods look different to any standard L98 ones that I have seen before, Question does anyone here recognize these rods????
They came in 94 and up LT1s, not sure what else. Supposed to be the best stock GM small block rod. Better than pinks.
That is good to know the engine is a Vortec out of a Mastercraft Boat, It will be interesting to find out what cam is in there
I am going to use the engine for a 4X4 that I am building, I was going to put a converted LT1 manifold on there with some 113's that I have sitting around and use a SD 7730 ECM, seing that it is a Vortec would the heads flow better than 113's ( I know the bolt pattern is different, that is not a problem as I havn't drilled the LT1 manifold as yet)
Vortec heads flow much better than 113s; as good or better than LT-1s. If you had a Vortec base, you could use a TPI set-up and make some really big Torque numbers at lower RPMs. I'd think that would be better, for a heavy 4x4 truck.

Since it is a boat motor the cam will have a short duration. Because the way boats cool the exhaust.
There are a variety of Vortec head castings. Some are more desirable
than others - the thread above has a link to the Mortec site where
quite a selection of casting numbers has been gathered.
It is possible that the marine engine is based on the OEM L31 long
block, including the cam. Are there any identifying marks on the
forward end of the camshaft?
