I would like to buy an OBD 1 scanner but I don't know much about them other than you need one. I would use it only on an 86 vette and I'd like it to be as simple as possible. I've heard about AutoXray but I don't know which model to look at. And do I buy the scanner, then a cartridge for the 86 vette or what? And what about the dash plug? Looks like there's all different kinds! Could someone please point me in the right direction? My service engine soon and low coolant lights are coming on. They stay on for awhile then go off. Coolant level is fine. (Think it's probably a low engine coolant indicator probe. I've ordered a new one.) Would like to know what that's all about but I guess I'll need to pull codes first. Thanks for any help.
depends on how much you want to spend, i bought a otc 4000 on flebay for 60 bucs. does all kinds of tests dont buy 2000 get the 4 you can find them with the software and cables for under 100 hope this helps autoxray is better but alot more money
If you just want to check for stored codes, you just need a paperclip to pull the codes and a factory service manual to troubleshoot. As for the low coolant light, make sure the coolant level is full and the air is out of the coolant system. Test the coolant level sensor and the green wire going to it.
As for scanners, you will need to make the decision. The handheld scanners are fine, but doesn't give all the info there is and you have to scroll through the info which takes time. You just need to find one with a GM ODBI connector. The laptop scanners are better, but takes more equipment to work and usuall cost a little more before scanning. With the laptop you can view all sensor data and datalog.
