I am replacing my original mufflers on my 85 Vette with only 29,000 miles. I want to replace them with factory style mufflers to keep it as close to original as possible. Has any one ever used these original style aftermarket mufflers and do they sound as good as the original ones that came on the car?
Just a note that I did install IMCO original replacement mufflers #OR-738 . They were a perfect fit and they sound terrific.A nice deep rumble just like the originals from the factory. I bought them from Zip Products at half the price of other competitors. I am very satisfied.
I had the same thoughts as you about keeping my 86 as original as possible but in the end changed my mind. When I priced out the OEM replacement mufflers and then looked at a new magnaflow cat back system I decided it would be better to upgrade with a stainless steel system. Better torque, increased horsepower and better gas consumption. I also replaced the cat with a high flow magnaflow stainless steel cat. Only exhaust system component left that is original is the front y pipe with the pre cats. I will likely change this out next year.
I went to Planet Magnaflow and paid 440 dollars for the cat back system and 125 dollars for that cat.
Car has a nice rumble in idle, and sounds more like a an old big block C3 on acceleration. You can check out the sound of the system on yu tube. Just type in corvette C4 exhaust.

You might check with Mid America Corvette, they have OEM style mufflers except with dual working outlets for $159.00 a pair I believe. Dual outlets are supposed to add a little sound and HP.
