Default ASR light and Security

My ASR light and security light will pop on as I'm driving and then if I turn my car off, I have to wait at least an hour to start it back up. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what the problem may be?

If you have a '92 or '93 and "SYS" displays in the gauges, my guess is the ECM is going bad.

Thank you, but my SYS is not being displayed, it is only my ASR and SECURITY light displayed, and it is causing my car to fail to start once it is shut off. I appreciate any other suggestions.

You should really identify your vehicle so others know what you want assistance with.
You will get more answers when others know.
There is nothing in your profile to tell us.
The C4 had many changes over the years, so assuming it is a C4 by a post on here doesn't help.
That is one of the biggest problems.

Default ASR and SECURITY light on 1992 vette

I have a 1992 corvette and my ASR and SECURITY light will pop on as I am driving. When this occurs, I am unable to restart my car after I shut it off for at least an hour or so it fails to start. Could it be shutting my fuel pump off as well? Does anybody have any suggestions perhaps?

Try this link, should give you a place to start, good luck.

On startup, the CCM (body computer) and ECM (the engine computer) do a security handshake over a dedicated serial bus. If that handshake doesn't happen, the ECM will not allow the vehicle to start and the "Security" light will flash.
Once the vehicle is running, if the that serial bus link is broken, the vehicle will continue to run and the SECURITY light will flash, but the vehicle will not restart when shut down.

This is a very common problem with the '92 and '93 ECM.
The symptoms are:
1) Security light will flash.
2) SYS will flash occasionally in the digital dash, but not continually
3) The ASR light will come on
4) If you have the C68 climate control, the green led on the buttons will flash

In my case, the problem would only happen after the engine heated the ECM under the hood.
When cold, it would start fine.
After the engine warmed up, the ASR, security, C68 Climate control lights would come on and SYS in the digital dash would flash once in a while.
It would not restart until the ECM cooled down.

All the problems went away after replacing the ECM.

That's good information to know Tom, thanks. I'm going to file this post in case my 93 ever exhibits similar symptoms!

Mine had some of those symptoms when my key went bad. Try another key and see if you have the same problems. Mine is a 1992 also.

A bad key will cause some of these symptoms on startup.

But, a bad key should not cause the security light to come on once it is running.
And, a bad key should never cause the ASR light to illuminate.

Sounds like a another ECM gone bad. I had the same symtoms including
the "SYS" blinking. It's really not that costly to have it rebuilt.

Where did you have this done? Seems many 92 & 93 owners have trouble locating one, thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I took the ECM to my Chevy dealer and they sent it out to have it rebuilt. It took about a week. I think Mid-America will do the same thing.
