Ok, I bought some Gunk Engine Degreaser, but Im not sure what I can/cannot spray it on, and what does/doesnt need to be covered. Can anyone thats used this help me? I just dont want to take a chance on messing something up. Thanks, Zak.
Gunk can ruin plastic and it may cause any polished aluminum pieces to become dull. Gunk is a petroleum-based solvent so if you spray it on and wash it off, you should have some way of catching the old oil and grease (and Gunk) that you remove. Lettng that stuff drain into street gutters and storm sewers is not good.
Simple Green is just as good and is not as harmful.
In any event, keep the Gunk and the rinse water off of the distributor cap, plug wires, and don't spray it on anything plastic if you can help it. It helps to have the engine slightly warm to loosen any dirt/oil/grease that has stuck to components.
The electrical connections are pretty much water tight but don't spray a forceful stream of water into the alternator. I have used my electric pressure washer to keep my 87's engine clean but I keep the nozzle about 3 feet away from everything and use a wide spray.
I used Black Magic Engine degreaser, it says that its safe to spray on the whole engine. I still play it safe and not spray it near the opti and electrical connectors and parts. And use a light mist, some say to do this while the car is running so if something is being effected by the spraying water youll know and stop doing it.
The engine gunk is a little harsher then some degreasers.

I have never used the Simple Green brand but I have used other cleaners. You will need alot of rags though no matter what you use. If you are going to pressure wash or use water. Put plastic bags over your alternator and disributor area. Don't use full pressure either. Try to stay away from the any electronics period. Like mentioned, if you have chrome or aluminum pieces under the hood, try to find some polish for it. I use Back In Black for any plastic pieces. It really works. You can get it at Napa or somewhere like that for about 3.00 dollars. Hope your project goes well.

Thanks. Ill probably get on it towards the end of the week.
Got a garden pump up sprayer ? Rinse it out and put the simple green in that. Adjust the sprayer nozzle and you got good control of where you spray it. Fill the pump with water and rinse off same way. The long handle is good for reaching the lower part of the motor and getting around spark plug areas. Good Luck.
