Default Camshaft Change

I'm planing to change my OPTI to the later design which will require the camshaft to be changed on my 93 LT. Can I swap the cam without removing the intake manifold?

Thanks in advance!!

Pulling the intake will be the easiest part of your camshaft swap. Everything else .

If the only reason you're doing this work is for the vented opti, it is a hell of a lot cheaper and simpler to just buy an aftermarket vented opti.

This is how it starts. To change the cam, you have to pull the intake. If you're going to pull the intake, might as well port it. If you're going to be that close to the heads, might as well take them off and port them while you're at it. If you're going to do that, might as well put a really good cam in it instead of that mild cam you were considering before. If you're going to do that though, you'll need to upgrade the bottom end to let it spin higher. If you're going to do that, you might as well stroke it. And before you know it you've built a $7,000 383 with 500 rwhp.

If you can't afford that, then figure out a hp target, what it will take to get there, and what you will have to do to afford it. If it doesn't include robbing any banks, then go for it! Also keep in mind drive train upgrades you may need, like torque converters or ring and pinion sets. And don't underestimate the value of a good set of drag radials. Until you've tried them, you have no idea how great they really are.

Changing the OPTI style does NOT require changing the cam. The COVER yes, but you can either vent the older style or get an aftermarket one that's vented.

Unless you want to get creative using the older style cam and modify it while still installed, it should come out to be either be modified or repaced... Correct??
The stock older style cam dowel isnt long enough to drive the newer opti and the center hole in the cam is different as well!

Your right

http://www.enginebuildermag.com/Arti...lt1_enige.aspx

But he can still either went an older opti, or get an aftermarket one that's already vented.
That way he doesn't have to change the cam.

I know the HotCam kit works on the older cars, but it kinda makes you wonder.

Brian,
You are a stand up guy for posting more accurate info on this subject; (Unfortunately I had to turn to other LTx sites to learn myself)...

BTW I am following your budget blower rebuild!

Keep the correct info going Bro....
