Just got a 87' convertable off my brother and there seems to be a decent amount of rattles of give in the doors, but more importantly the deck lid. Any suggestions it helping to minimize this, I know a convertable will have more rattles than a coupe, I just don't want somone to start singing "Chitty, Chitty, Bang Bang".
I have an appointment to take it on Nov. 19th to Vettestorations in Southfield, MI and let them keep it for a couple of days and come up with a list of items to take care of. Just wanted to see if anyone has had any success.
My first thought without seeing it is that maybe the weatherstripping needs to be replaced. Old weatherstrip shrinks and might allow the doors and decklid to rattle.
I had an '89 coupe and now I have an '89 vert. The coupe rattled much more. The vert is a much more solid car with all of the extra bracing and such. The targa panels on the coupes have a way of rattling alot in the cold. At least that was the case with my car.
My convertible deck lid does not rattle when the top is up, only when it's down. If I throw a folded bath or beach towel on top of the top before closing the lid everything fits more snug and the rattles stop. Plus I have a towel with me. You never know when you might need a towel.
The other thing I do is turn up the radio. What rattles?
Typical '80's GM plastic interiors... you're going to have to live with some rattles. Even if you eradicate them, you'll find any fix is only temporary.
That said, the conv storage lid can make some really loud rattles if it's out of adjustment. I think there's a procedure in the FSM, but check the bumpers near the latches and also that the rear bow has good tension when latched. Are the rattles from back there the same with top up or down?
A persistent "rear deck" rattle on my '86 convertible had me searching for quite some time before I located the source. It sounded like it was right behind the passenger. I thought it was connected to the deck lid or the top.
Turned out to be a fuel line running across the top of the tank and down the right side. Some double-sided foam insulation eliminated the problem. It's worth a look to see if you've got the same rattle.
