I have an 84 crossfire 4+3 and i have a chance to pick up a 96 LT1 from a cop car for 475. It comes with the motor and wiring harness. My question is should i pick it up and do the swap? and how much work would this be. I have searched and read mixed emotions. Could this be made to work with my 4+3? will it bolt up to the engine yes or no? what will need to be done to put this engine in and is it going to be worth the work. I have a friend that will do it for me. Just need to know how hard it will be if its worth it and if my tranny can possibly bolt up
the transmission you have will fit regardless of auto or 4+3. Traditional sbc mounts bolt right upo to the LT1. The only thing to watch for is to make sure your getting the 5.7 LT1 there is a smaller displacement motor but cannot recall what size it is. For wiring if you can use the harness from the donor carand its not too bad.
As stated,it will bolt up. The first "gotcha" that comes to mind is the flywheel. The one piece rear main seal LT1 engine is externally balanced in the rear. Your '84 is not only internally balanced, but your two piece seal flywheel won't bolt to the one piece seal crank flange of the LT1. There are a couple of ways to deal with that, but it is best that you are aware it's an issue, going in. Most if not all accessories and accessory brackets will be different, so it is best if the engine is complete with all accessories. As I imagine you are aware, the cooling and ignition systems are totally different. It isn't an over night drop in, but it ought to be doable
I did it to my 84 and thought it was not that bad of a job and I did it for less then 3K including rebuilding the motor. My best advice if you decide to go forward is to get the LT1 corvette assy bracket because I know they fit. You will need to fab or get fabed new Fuel lines, either wire the LT1 harness into the 84 or have someone build you a 3 wire hook up harnesss, have the LT1 ECM tuned for the car, and if you decide you want A/C, have A/C lines fabed. I did all my own wiring and mechanical work so the labor was free but it aould probably be a lot more $$$ if you had someone else do the work. My best advice is to buy the book corvette fuel injection as it will have a fairly good wiring diagram for both cars as far as the FI and ECM goes
